THE KINGDOM PAST—HISTORIC
Memorize Matthew 21:43.

In times past God made certain promises in Genesis 12:1, 2; 13:14-16; 26:3, 4; 28:12-14 to Abraham, later to Isaac, then to
Jacob, that their descendants would make a great and notable nation. This nation began its development while in bondage in
the land of Egypt and later headed up under one leader, Moses, who delivered it through the power of God and journeyed
with it toward a land promised to it, which it was to receive as an inheritance (Gen. 15; Lev. 20:24; Num. 34:13). After entering
the Promised land, it was ruled by judges for a space of about four hundred fifty years (Acts 13:20).

It then asked for a king like the kings of the nations around it (1 Sam. 8:1-10; 9:27 to 10:1; Acts 13:21) In this manner the
nation of Israel became a kingdom with Saul as its first king. David became its second king and was followed by Solomon (1
Sam. 16:1-13; Acts 13:22; 1 Kings 2:1-4, 12).

After Solomon, the kingdom divided into two parts, with two capitals; and they remained thus divided until their national lives
ceased. The northern kingdom had Samaria for its capital and was composed often tribes. The southern kingdom had
Jerusalem for its capital and was known as the kingdom of Judah, while the northern kingdom was called Israel.

Israel was the Lord's kingdom. He chose it, protected, nurtured, and cared for it to the exclusion of all the rest of the world (1
Chron. 29:23; 28:5; Ex. 19:5). After a very colorful history of faith and trust in God, followed by degeneracy to idol worship and
unfaithfulness, the kingdom was overthrown "until he come whose right it is" (Ezek. 21:24-27)

Was the kingdom of Israel the kingdom of God ?
Does the fact that the kingdom passed out of existence show
that God was weak or had failed?
Why were Israel and Judah overthrown?
