Grace was born July 23, 1939.  I met her for the first time at
Oregon Bible College in the fall of 1957 when she came as a
student.

I soon learned she had a beautiful voice and loved to sing.  In
high school, she said talent scouts had heard her sing and
tried to persuade her to pursue a musical career, but she told
them her voice was from God and she would only sing for Him.

She told me when she was a small child playing with dolls that
she always pretended that the male doll was a pastor and the
female doll was the minister’s wife.  That was her dream, to be
a minister’s wife - the dream came true; we were married June
4, 1960.

We had three children and served three churches.  Our first
child, Laura, was born while we lived in Oregon, Illinois and
just before we moved to pastor in Morse Mill, Missouri; our
second child, Alan, was born just before we moved to pastor in
Bedford, Ohio and our third child, Mark, was born while we
pastored in Dayton, Ohio.  In 1976, we moved to pastor in
Macomb, Illinois.

Grace was deeply involved in all aspects of ministry from
leading Vacation Bible Schools, to teaching, to leading home
Bible studies.  She brought several to the knowledge of Christ,
and they were baptized.

But above all else, Christian music was her passion.  After she
discovered she had cancer in 1969, she continued to do concerts
– once only two weeks after lung surgery.

Finally, after moving to Macomb, Illinois, she began working on
making an album in conjunction with Pastor Dale Ramsey who also
loved Christian music.  He was the Oregon Bible College’s music
instructor at the time and was helping Grace to work through
the mechanics of getting a record album accomplished.

She died June 6, 1977 before it was done, but Dale put an
insert in the Oregon Bible College’s 1978 OBC Chorale album.
The words follow which include a few words by Grace’s own pen
that will illustrate her Christian values.

Grace Cain was born July 23rd, 1939 and fell asleep in Jesus
June 6, 1977.  Though she wasn’t allowed to live a full number
of years, she let the years she had be a glory and testimony to
God.  Her music touched those who heard her.  Her family, her
church, her friends, and all those who knew her will not forget
the way God moved through her music.

As a child, Grace dreamed of serving God through music and
ministry.  God blessed her and fulfilled her dreams.  Her voice
was a gift from God and, if at all possible, she never refused
an invitation to sing for Him.

Her one dream that wasn’t satisfied was to make an album.
Shortly before her death, still with this goal very much in
mind, Grace wrote:

“This album has been a dream of mine for many years.  I thank
God for bringing all my dreams into reality.  I’m dedicating
this album to every one of you who have prayed for me over the
past eight years.  Each prayer was answered, and I want you to
feel the strength of prayer, and know how valuable we are to
each other.  I have often prayed that God will bless each of
you for your love expressed to our family.  After facing three
surgeries for a cancer problem, I have learned how precious
each day is, and how complete God’s peace can be.  During each
time of stress and fear, the beauty of music has lifted my eyes
to God’s love.  Music is a special ministry and unique way of
sharing the message of Jesus.  Many of the songs included on
this album were the very ones that brought spiritual healing to
my heavy heart.  I pray that these songs will reach into your
heart too, and heal whatever hurt might be there.  Listen, and
let it happen.”

Because she was not able to make the album she planned and
because of her contribution to the lives of many people through
music, the Oregon Bible College Chorale dedicates this album to
the memory of Sister Grace Cain.  The hymn, “Because He Lives,”
was one of Grace’s favorites.  It was to be the first one on
her album.  The message of that song sums up the later years of
her life.

I used one of her taped concerts as a “thank you” gift for the
many who sent notes and gifts at her death.  I titled the tape,
“Grace Still Sings In Our Heart.”  And she does.

She sleeps in a cemetery in Macomb,Illinois awaiting the Lord’s
resurrection call.  On her stone is engraved the promise of
God: “The dead in Christ shall rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:
16).
